Montréal Eats: Basi Bistro Italien

Very good service and food.  The portions were large and the price was very reasonable.  We were especially amazed that our bread basket was a well-made focaccia.  Their appetizer and entrée were excellent.  However we were quite disappointed with the poorly made dessert and coffee.  Overall it was a very good dining experience, just avoid the dessert and coffee.

My ratings: ❤❤
Price range: $$-$$$

Foccacia

Prosciutto E Melone

Escargots crème et Chardonnay
Escargot was very tender.

Osso Bucco Milanese
Jarret de veau servi avec croquettes de risotto au safran et asperges
The osso bucco was very big.  Very tender and you didn’t need a knife at all.  The risotto croquette was a bit too dry.

Côtelettes de Veau
Avec sauce au poivre vert de Madagascar et pommes de terre au four garnies de Mascarpone, artichauts et épinards

Tiramisu

Cannoli Basi
Stale and soggy, and the filling wasn’t that good.

Espresso
Very badly brewed espresso.  It was barely saved by the hand-whipped cream.

We returned to Basi again in December, 2011.  Their foccacia bread basket isn’t as big as the previous one, but it’s a more reasonable size for appetizer.  It comes with a nice roasted red pepper spread that contains some jalapeño.  Their pasta dishes are quite disappointing compared to the other dishes we tried last time.  Dessert is still terrible.

Foccacia

Tonnato di Manzo
Very fresh tasting.  The roast beef was well made.

Farfelle Salmone
Sauce rosée, saumon fumé et fenouil
Pretty creamy and rich.  Not too bad but also nothing too special about this dish.

Pappardelle Funghi Salvaggi
Champignons sauvages, crème et huile de truffe
Pasta was very dry.  It reminded me of cream of mushroom soup.  Was very one-toned and didn’t have a rich funghi flavour.  Overall a very disappointing pasta dish.

Torta al Limone
Very dense and too sweet.  The frosting was gross and the lemon gummy was gross.  The best part of the dessert was the berries on the side.  I also don’t understand why they used a wilting mint to garnish the dish.

Panna Cotta au chocolat et Frangelico
Very poorly made.  The cream was overcooked and had a terrible scorched milk taste.

Just had dinner here with my pregnant wife and my sister and cousin. Me and my wife had bought a coupon online for a half price table dhote. My sister and cousin coincidentally had bought one too. Athough we noticed that it said max one per table we had made separate reservations (2 tables of 2next to each other) when arriving they sat us in a booth together so I assumed it wasn’t a big deal. The waiter came we informed him we had coupons he said no problem we’ll take it off the bill. When it came time to pay the waiter says that we can only use one coupon, saying he assumed we knew this. I told him about how we tried to inform him and he became very aggressive and went to get the owner. The owner was very rude and unprofessional. When I asked what the difference was that we sat at separate tables or shared one why we couldn’t both use our coupons. He replied “don’t tell me what to do in my restaurant. If this is not of value to you then don’t buy the coupon.” Getting all in my face and making a scene then storming off. This is the worst service I’ve ever had at a restaurant in my life and will never return.
