Pittsburgh Eats: La Prima Espresso Company

✣ Top pick ✣

Superb coffee quality.  There’s a huge La Cimbali machine right in front of you.  You can also buy their own roasted beans (in fact their factory is a block away at the produce terminal building).

My ratings: ❤❤❤❤❤
Price range: $

Cappucino
Excellent frothed milk.  It’s creamy and dense.  The bubbles are quite uniform.  The coffee is fresh and nutty, and the beans are not over roasted.

Pittsburgh Eats: Pittsburgh Popcorn Company

I thought they had such a brilliant marketing idea.  The store smells wonderful.  There are featured flavours of the week (and very unique ideas).  You get to see the staff preparing batches of popcorn (and flavouring them).  It’s a fun place to stop by.

Watermelon popcorn
Really tastes like watermelon candy.

Chipotle Cheddar
Tastes like cheetos with a smokey chilli flavour.

Pittsburgh Eats: Robert Wholey & Co Incorporated

Wholey is really a huge seafood market and a full size grocer, but they also have a big area dedicated to food made in-store.  I only tried their lobster bisque and rice cake, and both were fresh and delicious.

Lobster-Crab Bisque
Creamy and thick.  Not too salty and was very flavourful.

Pittsburgh Eats: Fortunes Coffee Roastery

Very good coffee shop.  It’s a large store with barrels of coffee beans for purchase.  Real ingredients are used, and not with artificial ingredients.  My iced coffee was a tad bit over roasted but nonetheless still pretty good coffee.

Pittsburgh Eats: DeLuca’s

I had high hopes for this popular breakfast place and it really didn’t disappoint.  Fast service and food was made in front of you.  Food is not too salty, burnt or overcooked.  Just cooked perfectly.  You must come early, the line is out of the door by 8 in the morning already (it was more than half full when I arrived at 7:15).

Pittsburgh Eats: Enrico Biscotti Company

The store smelled like buttery baked goods – no sorry not a huge fan of this aroma.  The biscotti was fresh and tasted great, but I found them oversweet.  The flavoured biscotti just tasted like regular almond biscotti (guess it’s still the same flavouring?).

Pittsburgh Eats: Mancini’s Bread Company

I had high hopes from the reviews I read.  Sadly I didn’t like it.  The bread was fresh, but it was very soft and on the salty side.  It lacked a good crust and a flavourful fermented yeast taste.  Later on I read that lard is part of the ingredients.  Personally I don’t find lard to be unhealthy fat, lard is amazing in pie crust and it is better than butter.  This just isn’t the type of bread that I like (I did like the cornmeal at the bottom), and this type of soft bread is not very good bread to me.
