Québec City Eats: Chez Ashton

It’s a quebec-city chain but if you want to try a good quebec poutine this is not a bad place to visit.  The cheese curds are always plentiful and squeaky (if you don’t know how fresh cheese curds should be like, you should come here and try their poutine).  The fries are pretty ordinary but they are always hot and that serves the purpose for a good poutine.  I personally thought the gravy was too salty, but it was very flavourful indeed.  And yes, this is the poutine store that’s famous for giving discounts when the temperature reaches -10, -20, -30, -40 etc 🙂

Frites fraîches, fromage en grains frais du jour et sauce maison, le tout agrémenté de délicieux morceaux de saucisses grillés à point.
I guess I should have just stayed with a plain regular poutine (which are very well-made).  The toppings could be a hit or a miss, the second photo shows burnt sausages (and they also dropped a few sausages right in front of me, there goes the extra buck 😦 )

Agneau, fromage feta, zaalouk, amandes grillées, laitue, mayonnaise, moutarde forte
The ingredients were fresh and flavourful.  The bun was a good piece of bread and was also able to hold all the mess.

The cheese curds were a bit icy-cold, but it’s still a good poutine.

Kingston Eats: Arisu Restaurant

✣ Top pick ✣

I love Arisu.  It is definitely my favourite Korean restaurant.  The first time we came here it was for YJ’s birthday, and they gave us a very beautiful complimentary sushi boat.  Since then I have revisited many times.  Their gam ja tang is my staple.  C said it’s even better than any gam ja tang she tried in Toronto.  The banchan here deserves special mention as well.  They are always extremely well executed and the kitchen doesn’t give you the same banchan over and over again.  This is comfort food at its best (funny how I describe this as comfort food because I never had non-Chinese food prior to coming to Canada).  Their Japanese food isn’t too bad (although not the best offered in Kingston).  It is also nice to note that the rice they use is the real Korean rice, not any crappy rice variety sold in supermarkets here in North America.

Kingston Eats: Jina Sushi

This is a very small restaurant (can sit maybe around 15 people?) that is located away from downtown Kingston area.  It’s a lot closer to West campus and St. Lawrence College.  I lived on west campus for 3 years but I never knew about this place until my 4th year after I moved out from west (that said, I also don’t go out for restaurants in the past).  It’s a bit sketchy when you first arrive because there’s barely anything in that block (maybe just a convenience store, Tim Horton’s and a local pharmacy shop).  I wasn’t expecting much but they really wowed us.  The owner is Korean lady and doesn’t speak English very well, but she is very friendly and nice.  Portion size is very big and quality is good.  I had very good bulgogi here.  Their Americanized sushi rolls are quite delicious, even though I’m not a fan of this type of over-the-top showy rolls that are named after all sorts of North American cities and states (Good maki rolls are like well-crafted sandwiches.  It could get complicated when ingredients add up to 3 or above, but it shouldn’t be a method to mask bad quality ingredients.  The contrasting flavours and textures all come together to create something better together.  The better the ingredients, the better the final result will be).
