Kingston Eats: The Pilot House Of Kingston

It’s a small pub and it has a very cozy atmosphere.  Service is alright.  No comments on the drinks because I don’t drink.  Meals are generally pretty good here.  I heard their fish and chips are the best in town (tagline “Famous for fish and chips since 1981”).  Well it’s passable if you’re having an intense craving for fish and chips, but don’t expect it to live up to the standard of good fish and chips from England.

Halibut Fish and Chips
Very fresh and not greasy at all.  The fish was in one piece and quality wasn’t bad.  However I didn’t like the batter, it was much too thick and it had a bit of a gummy texture to it.  The cucumber tartar sauce was quite good.  The fries were disappointingly soggy (there was only a mere 5 minute lag between getting the food and eating the fries).

Kingston Eats: The Iron Duke on Wellington

Iron Duke is a nice pub with lots of seating available.  The place was built in 1852.  There are also quite a lot of booths and tables so you get some privacy.  Food was good, and the restaurant emphasizes local products.  I think Iron Duke is an interesting gastro pub that offers everything from traditional pub fare to innovative cuisine (also very pricery for bar fare).  The menu includes everything from basic British cuisine to appetizers and entrées that comes with an international twist.   (Can’t comment on the drinks because I don’t drink alcohol.)  However it was just strange to leave a pub after an entrée with kind of an empty stomach 😕  In general I wouldn’t mind to come in and sit down for a nice lunch or dinner special.  You couldn’t really find fault with most of the menu and food, but I also don’t think it’s a top-notch pub.

0411 Braised Lamb Poutine (Iron Duke)Braised Lamb Poutine
Slow braised lamb shoulder, fresh cheese curd, Yukon gold fries and gravy, topped with crumbled feta.
X said it’s good but a bit too lamby.

0411 Duck Confit (Iron Duke)Duck Confit
Crispy confit local duck leg on braised red cabbage with andouille sausage, peppers & roast potatoes.
It was good, but I definitely had better duck confit in Le Chien Noir.  It’s not a heavy entrée.

Kingston Eats: Tir Nan Og

It’s a very large pub (also connected to the Old Speckled Hen, both are inside the Prince George Hotel).  Can’t comment on the drinks because I don’t drink, but the food is totally disgusting!  I bit into the fries and there was something that had a taste of bleach cleaning detergents 😈  Makes you wonder what happens with the kitchen cleaning protocol.  Avoid this place like the plaque! 😡

0711 Lamb burger (Tir Nan Og)Lamb burger
Made in-house and topped with caramelized onions, sliced tomatoes, and crumbled Stilton cheese.  Served with fries seasoned with sea salt.
Portion is small for pub food, and it’s overpriced for a mediocre burger.  The patty was under seasoned and the bun wasn’t good quality (for a $14 burger!).  Fries were alright at first (thick cut fries that had a soft fluffy centre) until I bit into the gross detergent fries 👿

Kingston Eats: The Queen’s Pub

Student run pub service on campus ran by the AMS.  Food was just mediocre, pretty much the same food that you can make at home (well you can make better food at home to be honest).  Nothing too special about it.

NYC Eats: J.G. Melon

Overhyped, their burger is definitely not the best burger that ever existed.  The patty was fresh and juicy, but that’s all about it for the small burger that I paid a premium price for.  The bun was disgusting.  It tasted like a bun bought from the supermarket, and it turned soggy even before you finish the burger.  Their cottage fries on the other hand were excellent.

My ratings:

Cheeseburger
The bun was cold and turned soggy very quickly.  The cheese didn’t even melt properly.  It’s just not worth the price (nor the hype).  You can probably do better than this at home.

Cottage fried fries
Now these ones are amazing.  They are like little crispy potato pillows that’s crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside.  Also they aren’t greasy.
