Kingston Eats: The Works Gourmet Burger Bistro

It’s an interesting burger place.  The line is insanely long during the warm months.  There’s a lot to choose from the menu, but it seems to be more of a marketing gimmick.  Overall I think they have pretty good burgers, but the patty itself wasn’t that special (besides the fact that it is freshly made).  I had the whole wheat bun and I didn’t think it was very good.  Not enough gluten was formed from the dough and the bread was crumbly.

Kingston Eats: Harper’s Burger Bar

Harper’s is a gourmet burger restaurant and only fresh high quality and local seasonal ingredients are used.  I am a picky eater when it comes to any dough-related food.  Their burger bun is fresh made in store and is definitely not your average supermarket burger bun (which I loathe).  The menu is designed to marry very unique flavours together.  Service is very good too.  On the downside I find it to be much overpriced (compare to any other upscale burger joints you can find in other cities or even just other restaurants).

℘ Harper’s is a member of “Local Food Local Chef”, a Kingston initiative to promote the area as a destination of culinary tourism.

℘ Sister restaurants with Le Chien Noir & Atomica.

Kingston Eats: Mr. Donair

Donair is similar to doner kebab. Filling includes beef made from rotating roast and a sweet garlic sauce instead of tzatziki. While it most likely came from Greece, Turkey, or Lebanon, the donair has achieved ubiquity in Halifax, starting in the 1970s.  Therefore it is the Canadian adaptation of doner kebab.  I haven’t had many donairs in my life; I think Mr. Donair serves good donair.  I believe the father of a classmate and acquaintance of mine owns the shop, so I have faith in the quality here.  The pita bread is chewy but not soggy, and they are very generous in the fillings.  There is an ample amount of beef donair and they try to stuff every single toppings you ask for in the wrap.  You will be full by the last couple bites.  I also find their in-house made garlic hot sauce very addictive.

0311 Beef donair (Mr Donair)Beef donair
Shaved spiced beef in a pita with toppings and sauce

0411 Pete's Pounair (Mr Donair)Pete’s Pounair
Poutine topped with donair
Toppings: Tomatoes, onions, lettuce
Sauces: Garlic, Hot and Tzatziki
The fries were from frozen packages.  They were nicely seasoned and isn’t too salty.  There was just enough gravy to cover the fries and melt the cheese without drowning the fries.  You get a lot for what you pay for.  It was a filling meal without feeling grossly heavy.

Kingston Eats: Tommy’s

Classic diner.  It’s quite clean and nicely decorated inside.  It’s open 24 hours during the weekends, which makes it a popular spot in this part of downtown (near all the bars and pubs).  Waitress ignored us for quite a while, and a lot of things on the menu were unavailable.  Food was so-so, and a bit overpriced for the quality and portion.

Kingston Eats: Copper Penny

It’s a popular hangout restaurant for students and families, but I think it’s overpriced for a very mediocre menu and food.  Their dessert is very terrible (we never finished them.  As an indicator, we don’t throw any food out unless it went bad or it’s inedible).  My floormate told me they used to serve a bigger portion of food than they do now.

My ratings: ❤❤
Price range: $$-$$$

0411 Penny on the Farm (Copper Penny)Penny on the Farm
The largest platter of food you’ll ever see! Charboiled steak topped with gravy, fried onions and mushrooms n garlic toast alongside a grilled chicken breast, over one third of a pound of ribs, chicken finger, breaded mushrooms, steamed vegetables, and your choice of potato.  Have your ribs and chicken breast served with your choice of honey-garlic, teriyaki or any degree of BBQ sauce you desire.
Breading was too thick and there were various burnt parts on the food.  It wasn’t bad but I also see lots of room for improvement.

0811 Chicken Portobello Skillet (Copper Penny)Chicken Portobello Skillet
Grilled chicken breast topped with out Portobello mushroom sauce, sweet roasted cloves of garlic and diced green onion.  Served with steamed vegetables and roasted rosemary potatoes.

0811 8oz New York Steak (Copper Penny)8oz New York Steak
The finest steak basted with BBQ sauce while cooking over the hot coals, just the way you like it!  Served with steamed vegetables, sautéed mushrooms and choice of potato.
Burnt food…

0411 Chocolate Suicide (Copper Penny)Chocolate Suicide
Layers of chocolate mousse, rich, mouth-watering chocolate cake & thick, dark chocolate fudge icing finished with a piece of milk chocolate
Cake was dry (and it felt warm even though it came from the fridge).  The icing was very gross and felt like eating grainy-textured softened butter – don’t be mislead by the description, it barely tasted like chocolate.

0411 Oreo Chocolate Cake (Copper Penny)Oreo Chocolate Cake
The cake was very dry.  I wonder how many days have they kept this cake in the fridge?  I make much better (and moist) chocolate cake than they do.  At least the oreo cookie wasn’t soggy.  I did like the filling in between – it was rich in milk flavour with bits of oreo in it (I’m guessing whipped cream was one of the ingredients).
