It’s a nice cafe for coffee (and they do have nice coffee here), but skip the food on the menu.

0414 Bacon & Mixed Mushrooms Spaghetti (Caffe Kenon)Bacon & Mixed Mushrooms Spaghetti
in Cream Sauce
The pasta is undercooked, and is far from “al-dente”. It also doesn’t taste like fresh pasta

0414 Chorizo Sausage Pizza (Caffe Kenon)Chorizo Sausage Pizza
Chorizo Sausage, Cherry Tomatoes, Mixed Mushrooms, Mozzarella Cheese, Cheddar Cheese, Tomato Sauce
The bread was crap, tasted more like flavourless cracker than a good pizza base. The chorizo sausage was very thick, and kept sliding off from the pizza. Tomato didn’t taste very fresh, and had a strong metallic taste to it

Kingston Eats: The Tea Store

The first store is in Ottawa’s Byward market (we’ve been there before, it’s a very lovely store).  The other store is in Kingston, and has been here for many years already.  I think they have very nice and interesting blend of teas.  It’s nice to look around and check out the different specialty blends.  Price is also reasonably priced – more expensive than tea at Tara’s, but cheaper than the tea at David’s Tea.  I really like the tea at Tara’s Natural Food.  It’s good quality tea at a cheap price.  I don’t like David’s Tea because it’s seems to be a big marketing gimmick with a very marked up price (I am also no stranger to tea drinking, so I have a good idea of what the tea should be priced at relative to its quality).

Internet is provided here.  I wouldn’t recommend this as a place for working/reading because of the radio at the background.  I do think it’s a nice little place to meet with friends and have a nice long chat.  You can ask for refills for the pot of tea.  The baked goods are alright – not the best but also not the worst.  Owners and workers are also very friendly here.

0411 Nanaimo bar and apple pie (Tea Store)Apple Pie
I like that it’s very tangy.  The crust wasn’t too good.  It wasn’t soggy, it was very flaky.  I just don’t like the crust that much.
Nanaimo Bar
I was surprised to find Nanaimo bar here.  Unfortunately it wasn’t that good.  The ratio of the bar was off (too much icing, too little chocolate).  The icing was rather grainy and too fluffy (where’s the custard powder?).  The bottom was an interesting layer of coconut and nuts and had a slight hint of coffee flavour.

Kingston Eats: Coffee & Company

This is becoming one of my favourite coffee places in Kingston now.  It’s a nice coffee house to come in, sit for a few hours and work.  There are many sitting available (small table for 2, enough for one to come in and have enough room to leave your belongings).  Coffee served is pretty good (nice dark roast, milk foam quality).  They also sell Godiva chocolate and related products here.  I also discovered their dessert selection gets updated once in a while (and very good quality, although not made in store).

0411 Raspberry Lemon Crunch (Coffee & Company)Raspberry Lemon Crunch (by La Rocca Creative Cakes)
Layers of lemon mousse, white sponge, almond meringue and raspberry compote surrounded by ladyfingers and finished with raspberry glaze and toasted meringue.
This was very delicious (much better than Dufflet pastries served at Mug & Truffle).  It was a nice tangy bland of lemon and raspberry.  The meringue tasted like marshmallow.  It’s also a very light cake.

0911 Lemon Mousse Cake (Coffee & Company)Lemon Mousse Cake (by La Rocca Creative Cakes)
A light zesty lemon mousse and fresh 35% whipping cream surround two layers of white sponge cake. White chocolate shavings coat the exterior and fresh lemon wedges gracefully decorate the top.

Kingston Eats: The Sleepless Goat Café and Workers Co-operative

Sleepless Goat Cafe is a workers cooperative coffee house serving up affordable fair trade coffees, desserts and vegan fare.  They have good homemade desserts (on the rustic side) in Kingston and decent quality coffee (not the best quality, kind of on the mid-range).

This is a great place for coffee and dessert (I find there vegetarian menu too greasy 😕 ). It’s a local, organic menu, with fair trade coffee.  If you are an avid coffee drinker, you will appreciate and understand the importance of good foam milk.  Sleepless goat not only serves good quality coffee, they also produce very good foam milk with uniform tiny bubbles throughout.  Once I had a beautiful heart-shaped latte heart on a heart patterned cup.  The ability to draw latte art is a good indicator that the microfoams are at its best.  Sadly I deleted that photo 😦

0211 Blueberry Strawberry Cheesecake with cappucino (Sleepless Goat)Blueberry Strawberry Cheesecake with cappuccino
I am not a big fan of American cheesecake, but I’m very impressed by their cheesecake here.  The crust is not the usual graham cracker crust and taste a bit like a tart crust.  The cheesecake layer is very delectable without feeling very rich.  It’s not perfect however.  And as much as I liked the crust, the cake-to-crust ratio is also pretty horrible.
Note:   Occasionally you might receive an overbaked cheesecake 😦 It could be a hit or a miss – seems to have problems with consistency.

Kingston Eats: Coffeeco

After living here for a few years I realized it’s not easy to find a good coffee shop in Kingston.  I did like Coffeeco at first because their brewed coffee was good.  All products here are certified organic.  I think they have good quality coffee, but their baristas have poor technique, thus ruining a good cup of coffee.  I also didn’t like the bathroom door being wide open and facing the customers.

0911 Cappuccino & Scallion Scone (Coffeeco)Cappuccino
It wasn’t well made.  The coffee beneath was good but the steamed milk was very foamy and badly made.

Quite buttery but also tad bit too greasy.

Kingston Eats: Sipps Coffee & Dessert Bar

Sipps has a very nice environment.  The exterior faces market square while the inner part is very nicely decorated.  It’s not a bad place to come and sit with your friends and have a chat.  There’s no internet here, and the background radio is quite loud (or sound from the counter while staff prepares for orders).  However I don’t think it’s a great coffeehouse.  Coffee isn’t very good quality, and dessert isn’t too good either.

My ratings:
Price range: $-$$

0511 Blended matcha (Sipps)Blended matcha
The white swirly part was crushed ice that wasn’t mixed well (there’s also a lot of ice on the top).  It’s a bit too sweet but at least it doesn’t taste like a diluted drink.  However I am very offended by a comment made by one of the staff the other day when a customer asked what matcha was.  The staff described it as “it tastes like grass” 😯 Perhaps you have mistaken this with barley green? 🙄

0411 French Vanilla, Pomegranate Rosehip, Lemon Madness, Truffle Chocolate bar (Sipps)Rosehip Tea
We were surprised that they gave us a teapot for one order.
Lemon Madness
Nice tangy fluffy cheese layer.  It reminded me the texture of French cheesecake.  The crust wasn’t too good.  It was very crumbly.
Truffle Chocolate Bar
Again, the crust was bad.  The middle layer was creamy and smooth, but it the chocolate flavour wasn’t too intense.

0711 Key Lime Blast & Chocolate Xtreme (Sipps)Top: Chocolate Xtreme
Rich choclate with a callebaut chocolate swirl
Bottom: Key Lime Blast
Lime, with a kick!
Sipps had homemade ice cream during summer.  It wasn’t nicely churned.  The texture was icy ice cream.

Kingston Eats: The Mug & Truffle Chocolate Café Inc

Mug & Truffle serves deli selection (from Montréal deli), ice cream (from Kawartha), cakes and pastries (from Dufflet Pastries), and fair trade coffee. I don’t quite like this place.  The lady reminded me of old librarians.  We talked to her but she just wasn’t friendly.  The cake was good, but it wasn’t made in-store.  I haven’t tried the deli but I don’t know why I want to, considering the fact that Golden Rooster Deli is only a block away.  The bagels are from Gryfe’s Bagels in Toronto, and I also don’t know why I want to buy it because Pan Chancho is also just a block away from here.  On the other hand, one can appreciate the fact that these options (Kawartha, Dufflet, Gryfe’s Bagels etc) out of town are available for customers at Mug & Truffle.  Personally I’d rather buy local so it doesn’t appeal to me.  The coffee is alright (better than Starbucks anyway) but there are better coffee shops around this area (Coffee & Company is just at the other corner).  You can’t choose the size of the coffee.  It’s all served in a very big mug.  I also think there are very limited options for coffee selections.  I don’t care for how many types of specialty lattes you have, it’s very fancy stuff.  I want to see more types of coffee roast that you have in the café.  I think quality is more important than quantity for a coffeehouse.

0411 Toffee Crunch Latte (Mug & Truffle)Toffee Crunch Latte
Sweet toffee & hazelnut
(Signature Lattes: Our signature lattes come with 1 shot of espresso, frothy milk & 2 flavour syrups topped with whipped cream)
The milk is velvety smooth.  Can’t taste much of the hazelnut in it.  It’s a very sweet drink.

0411 Milk steamer, hazelnut (Mug & Truffle)Milk steamer
With hazelnut flavour shot
Maybe because the serving size is too big, the hazelnut flavour also didn’t come out.  F said she definitely had far better hazelnut steamed milk elsewhere.

0411 Hazelnut cakelet (Mug & Truffle)Hazelnut cakelet
Chocolate and hazelnut cake, hazelnut buttercream, dark chocolate ganache
It was good, but nothing special.
