Kingston Eats: Pasta Genova

✣ Top pick ✣

I have passed by Pasta Genova so many times and finally got the chance to go in.  This is a lovely little Italian deli.  The owner is very friendly and nice.  The lady at the counter is also very helpful and sweet.  You can buy all sorts of fresh housemade items including deli meat, sausages, sauces, seasonal vegetables, pasta, pizza dough etc.  The store also carries packaged Italian goods.  Their pasta, bread dough, and sandwiches are superb!  Prices are very reasonable for the quality of food you get.  Also kudos for using biodegradable plastic bags 😉

0611 Fresh linguine and green garlic pesto (Pasta Genova)Fresh linguine and green garlic pesto
Perfect housemade pasta 🙂

0611 Vegetable focaccia sandwich (Pasta Genova)Vegetable focaccia sandwich
Contains eggplant, tomato, artichoke, olive, red pepper etc.  It’s very well made.  It’s not overly salty.  It has a nice balance of all kinds of vegetables in it without having either one ingredient overpowering the flavour.  The herbed focaccia bread is amazing.

0711 Cannoli (Pasta Genova)Cannoli
Shell is crispy (but strong enough to hold the filling).  The filling is rich, creamy and slightly tangy.  I think they fill the cannoli fresh once you order it.

Kingston Eats: Golden Rooster Delicatessen

This was the very first restaurant we stepped into when we first pull in Kingston.  It was near closing time so we never got a chance to try it.  Three and a half years later, I finally remembered about this deli and had the chance to eat in this classic staple deli in Kingston.  The owner is of German background.  Line is always long here but service is very quick and efficient.  Get a ticket number and wait in line until you are called.  The eat-in part is self-served.  Golden Rooster Deli serves very solid eastern-European food.  They also have their own tiny bakery section, and during seasonal times you can get a chance to buy specialty products (eg stollen, hot cross buns etc).  The shop also sells many eastern-European packaged food and confectioneries.  You can also buy good quality deli meat, sausages, and bread (with many varieties) here.

0411 Reuben (Golden Rooster Deli)Rooster’s own Reuben

They really pile up the meat.

0212 Oktoberfest Sausage on a Panini Roll (Golden Rooster)Oktoberfest Sausage on a Panini Roll

The sausage was very juicy.

0311 Homemade Marzipan-Rum Stollen 1 (Golden Rooster) 0311 Homemade Marzipan-Rum Stollen 2 (Golden Rooster)Homemade Marzipan-Rum Stollen
This is a Christmas time specialty.  I finally opened it in March, and it was still incredibly moist.  It also tastes very good, just like how a good loaf of fruitcake should taste like 🙂

Kingston Eats: The Ruffled Feather Fine Food Café & Deli

I can’t believe we passed by this nice little place and headed for the terrible West 76 Grill the other day.  The ruffled feather is a lovely little deli near the waterfront.  It is open from breakfast until dinner.  Menu is updated daily.  Place is very clean with lots of seating.  Food is decent.  A good selection of cheese and cold cuts are available here.  Many ingredients are taken from local farm or farms in Ontario & Québec.  There are also frozen take-home meals available.  A small but very well-done dessert section is available as well.  It was interesting when I read from the newspaper and found out the owner is the daughter-in-law of the much beloved Golden Rooster Deli.

0511 Monte Cristo with honey mustard (Ruffled Feather)Monte cristo with honey mustard
A very forgettable sandwich.  Couldn’t taste much of the mustard.  It was also quite dry.  The bread was fluffy and soft.  I think it was being pan fried.  I was actually expecting French Toast for a Monte Cristo 😕

0511 Mango Chantilly Cake (Ruffled Feather)Mango Chantilly Cake
The crumb was very fine and the cake was moist.  The frosting was very well done.

NYC Eats: Zeytuna Market

I like this grocery/bakery/deli place. It’s huge with a wide variety of food to offer.  There’s also a large selection of cooked food at the food court section.  Food is good and price is very affordable at this part of Manhattan.

NYC Eats: Katz’s Delicatessen

I finally tried this legendary deli.  Line is long but they have a very systematic way to get the lines moving.  Pastrami is good but not the best I’ve had.  I find it too salty.  It’s a pretty good Jewish deli (but overpriced).

My ratings: ❤❤❤❤

Pastrami Sandwich on rye
You’ll get a piece to try while you’re waiting for the sandwich to be assembled.  They also give you a lot of freshly pickled cucumbers (but some were very fibrous)

NYC Eats: Buonitalia

It’s a huge Italian grocer with a decent size deli counter.  They have all sorts of hot entrees that you can find, including sandwiches, pizza, pasta, salad, antipasto, and a few sweet items.  The grocer part is amazing, you can find all sorts of imported Italian goods.  The take-out food quality is good, just nothing too impressive.

Panino Napoli
Sweet Italian Sausages with Vegetables
They will warm it up on the grill for you.  The bread was rather dry and tasteless.  The sausage didn’t have a snap but it was quite good.  The eggplants and peppers were quite well prepared.
