周圍食 Aug’14:27 Kebab House Turkish Restaurant

It’s a very small shop and the owners speak in broken English, nevertheless the doner rolls are very filling and tastes great.

Passover ’13: Hamantashen Pastries

Hamantashen Pastries (Raspberry & Apricot) (✦✦✦✧✧)

I was pleasantly surprised to find this close to passover in Costco.

Kingston Eats: Ali Baba Kabab

Food is well prepared and well-seasoned.  Large portions at a reasonable price.  I do prefer the dipping sauce to be served on the side than mixed with the food.  By the way the Arabic black tea is complimentary.  The waitress’s service hasn’t been very great every time I visit.

NYC Eats: Katz’s Delicatessen

I finally tried this legendary deli.  Line is long but they have a very systematic way to get the lines moving.  Pastrami is good but not the best I’ve had.  I find it too salty.  It’s a pretty good Jewish deli (but overpriced).

My ratings: ❤❤❤❤
Price range: $-$$

Pastrami Sandwich on rye
You’ll get a piece to try while you’re waiting for the sandwich to be assembled.  They also give you a lot of freshly pickled cucumbers (but some were very fibrous)

NYC Eats: 2nd Ave Deli

Very good solid Jewish food.  They make very good matzoh balls here.  It’s light and fluffy.  I do find it expensive here, they do pile up the meat for you, but I still think the portion was small.  I’m just comparing to other (equally good) Jewish delis that would give me loads of food (perhaps too much for one person) at the same price range.

My ratings: ❤❤❤❤
Price range: $-$$$

Matzoh ball soup
with carrots and noodles
Excellent matzoh ball!  Soup was a bit overpowered by the taste of pasta, but it’s still good homemade soup (that’s not overly salty)

Center Cut Tongue sandwich
The rye bread was light and soft.  The tongue was well made.  It had a good distribution of fat and was very tender.

NYC Eats: Roxy Delicatessen

You won’t miss this place.  It’s right at the centre of Times Square with flashy lights on the outside.  Some food are ok, but most of them are mediocre and insanely overpriced (equivalent to daylight robbery in tourist area).  I only ended up here being caught up in a terrible bad weather condition and deserately needed a place to stay indoor.  Unless for extreme weather conditions, avoid this place.

Chocolate Croissant

Matzoh Ball Soup
The matzoh ball was fluffy, but it’s still much overpriced for a small bowl of soup.
Potato Latkes
Burnt and too crusty on the exterior.  Very expensive for such poorly made potato pancakes, and overpriced for such easy and simple recipe.
Pastrami sandwich
The pastrami was not right.  It tasted more like a hybrid of roast beef and corned beef, but on a very dry side.

NYC Eats: Carnegie Delicatessen

You may think with all the celebrity photos hung on the wall and a whole video with David Letterman might mean this is a good deli.  It’s just another tourist trap.  Food was bad and overpriced.  Their “world-famous” cheesecake looked burnt and overcooked on the outside to me.  The server’s attitude wasn’t aggressive, but they didn’t even smile.  You just don’t feel at ease whenever they pass by.

My ratings:
Price range: $-$$$

Pastrami omelette
With bagel and served with home fries
The fries were awful.  They were soggy and dry.  I saw another table returning all the home fries back to the kitchen.  The omlette was sitting in a puddle of grease.  The pastrami wasn’t too remarkable (quite dried out), I’ve had better ones in other deli (at least it’s better than the so called pastrami at Roxy).
